Live in Tennessee but work in Mississippi. Tax issues?

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

I live in Tennessee where there is no income tax. I work in Mississippi where there is income tax but no property tax. So I have the luck of paying one state’s income tax (MS) and another state’s property tax (TN). Now, to pay my MS state income tax, my wife’s salary that was completely earned in Tennessee is calculated into how much I owe Mississippi. Can anyone explain how this is possibly justified? I see taxing my income for working in MS (I use the roads, services, etc, it’s justified). But to require that I report my spouse’s income she earned in Tennessee and factor that into what I owe seems improper. The only way to avoid it is to file married separately but then that messes up our federal return. Any tips?

Do I have to file a state tax return?

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

I live in New Jersey, and have never filed taxes before(I’m young and my parents always claimed me.) I’m a full-time student in college, and only made $1,470 in 2006. I just e-filed my federal return with Turbotax, but skipped the state return because in NJ there’s a fee for state returns. Turbotax wanted $25.95 and since my state taxes from 2006 were only $20, I’d be wasting my money. Also, I know if you make less than a certain amount, you do not have to file at all, so since I only made a little over a thousand, maybe I don’t have to file a state return? Thanks for any help.

How to I claim my daughter on my taxes if my ex-husband has already filed?

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Our divorce decree states that we are to alternate years claiming our daughter. This year was supposed to be our year, but I e-filed my taxes and it was rejected because it said that she was already claimed by another person. He still has not returned my calls regarding this, but I can’t imagine who else would have claimed her. Anyway, who do I need to do in order to claim her since, according to the divorce decree, it is our year?
Sorry for the bad grammar and difficulty understanding this. I’m super-mad right now ;)
I just pulled out my decree and read through it and it actually does not say anything about claiming our daughter. After I thought about it, I think I just let it alternate because I felt like it was the “fair” thing to do. So basically, he did not have ANY right to claim her. I just hate to go to a lawyer to get it resolved.

Tax Question?? Please help!!?

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

I temporarily moved to Arizona in earlySeptember of 2006 and started work at Toys R Us in late September as a seasonal employee. I did not get a address change because I am moving back in March of this year so my permanent address is still in Chicago. On my w-2 from my job it has my address here. How do I go about filing? Do I do the federal return for Arizona and the State return for Illinois?

What is the minimum income to report it to the IRS?

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Sorry, the question is pretty vague. I primarily work one job, in 2006 I took on a new job just to make a few extra bucks, I worked there for two hours then quit. After Social Security and Medicare were deducted, I made a total of 13.85 on the one paycheck I earned from them. No Federal or State taxes were deducted from my check.

The question is, do I need to report this income to the IRS? I need to file a tax return NOW and I’m tired of waiting for this W-2 to come in the mail. I have to file quickly because I am starting school and need to file a FAFSA.

Can I file US federal and state tax returns separately?

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

This is because I feel I can get more federal return from online service provider A than a similar service provider B. But the catch is that A will charge me more than B to file for the state.
By the way, my gross salary for 2006 is $39K. Can someone suggest me the best site to get the maximum returns for free (federal as well as state)?
