By having a prfessional prepare your taxes they will be able to make sure sto include everything that has to be included this may make it more profitable and also the IRS is less likely to audit you on your taxes if a professional prepares them.
There may be a fee but it is often worth it because you get the most out of your money. The tax professional will make sure that you get everything that you can get (credits and deductions) and if there is an audit you will have a professional there to help you through it. At most professional tax offices (H & R Block) there are also guarentees to the taxes being right and if they are not right they will usually make it right with you (Pay penalties or some of the amount you owe if they were wrong).
the only benefit of having a pro file your return is the double check. if it’s not right they will pay your penalties and interest for you. IF AND ONLY IF you provided them all the info and they filed it wrong.
they usually charge a small fortune. you can usually find a retired tax man/woman in the paper willing to do your return for you at a fraction of the price.
http://www.taxact.com will allow you to prepare your taxes personally and usually for free. if you only owe $9. there is nothing wrong with that.
once you prepare your taxes, take it to block or some other local preparer to look it over. block usually only charges if they see something that you have overlooked and you allow them to re-do the takes.
i retired from block several years ago and now i use taxact.com, turbotax and hrblock.com they are all great sites and great products and well worth looking into doing it yourself. UNLESS of course your return is difficult and full of complications.
