How do I make corrections on my taxes from two years ago?

I declared and then later learned that there was an error on my W-2. How do I make corrections after I have filed? Are there specific forms or procedures?

  1. Use 1040x. You have 3 years from the year in question to correct any mistakes. You fill out the amended return just as you did your return from 2 years ago with the exception of the corrected error (that is, the IRS will compare both returns and find the error themselves).

  2. File an amended return with the corrections.

  3. 1040x is right, but the part about 3 years is questionable. the IRS has 3 years for assessment, and 6 years if the error is a substantial understatement (error>25% of gross income).
