Can I file US federal and state tax returns separately?

This is because I feel I can get more federal return from online service provider A than a similar service provider B. But the catch is that A will charge me more than B to file for the state.
By the way, my gross salary for 2006 is $39K. Can someone suggest me the best site to get the maximum returns for free (federal as well as state)?

Depending on what state you live in, you may be able to file for free on your state’s franchise tax board site. Look it up on your state’s ftb site.

You do not have to file your federal return with the state. The state return will require some information from the federal return though. Most free website are for lowincome people. Go to the IRS.gov to find a listing of efile providers that do free efile. But you can got to turbotax.com to do your return, but you don’t have to actually file it. You will know what your outcome will be and if you decide that you want efile it, you can for a fee. They will do your fed, or your state, or both.

If you’re talking about e-filing, some states require you to file your state and federal returns together. If you’re filing paper returns they are always filed separately, but many states require a copy of your federal return to be filed with your state return.

Don’t try to save a few $$$ by using 2 preparers! That’s false economy. If you walk in to preparer B with a completed federal return and ask them to prepare your state return, their cost will be higher than it is for the combined returns since they will have to duplicate much of the work as well as verify the other preparer’s work.

Your income is too high for free filing. The least expensive way out for you would be to get a commercial tax prep package like Tax Cut or Turbo Tax and prepare and file your return yourself. That will cost much less than half of what the cheapest storefront tax prep mill with charge and will be just as fast and accurate.

Yes you can, although many states require that you use the same filing status.

A red flag though – if two different providers are coming up with different refunds for the same person and information, then something is wrong. Compare the two and see what the difference is.

Many state websites let you efile your state taxes from their website, or you have the option of efiling just federal and mailing in your state return.
