Amending a Tax Return – i1040x?
I’m trying to figure out what I have to do now to amend my tax return. I already sent in my federal income tax return and I have received what was owed to me. But due to a lazy ex-employer I didn’t receive a 1099-Misc wages form until after I had already done all of this. I’m trying to figure out what I need to do to fix this problem. Also, I checked the wrong box for filing status and put single instead of Head of Household (which I qualify for). I haven’t yet sent in my state tax return. I used the online ez-tax return software to send in my federal income tax return.
What would be the next step in correcting this problem and figuring out what I owe back to the government or how much more they owe me? And would any of this effect my state income tax return?

Your next step is to fill out a 1040X and include everything that your 1040 *should* have included. Mail it in to the IRS and they’ll send you a check for your additional refund (assuming the HOH status entitles you to one that the 1099 doesn’t take away).

You entire post is an oxymoron.
1099-Misc is NOT wages. According to the IRS, *you* were to keep track of the income and not rely solely on the 1099-Misc. By rights, *you* forgot to include the income when you filed without it.
As for fixing your taxes, get a blank 1040, a blank schedule C-EZ and a blank SE. Fill them out including your total income for the year. Copy over page 2 to the 1040X and attach the C-EZ and SE. Sign, mail and include a check for what you owe.
Yes, you will have to amend the state and will owe there as well.
As for HOH, did you forget your dependent as well?

you can amend your return now that the original is in the system(you know this because you got your refund)
since you haven’t filed your state yet, you might do your amendment and take the information that that will result to file your original state return since it would be more timely once the amendment is taken care of
some states take the information directly from the 1040 to input on the state but since you are going to probably do this by hand, it should not be a problem
