Does using H & R bloc or the services of an accountant or using tax software?

really have more advantage (in terms of accuracy and getting higher refund) than filing your own return in paper. Everybody wants to pay less tax. Do we really pay more when we do it in paper?

I’ve been doing it in paper since I arrived here in canada in 2005. I believe I’ve been doing it as accurately as I can, following the instructions diligently on the paper package. I get a few hundred dollars refund and I’m happy about that. I never get audited. I heard stories from people paying less (means getting more refund) because they use H & R bloc, turbo tax or used and accountant. What do these people know that are not mentioned in the CRA paper package?

I already have RRSP, doing donations… what else do I need to know that are not mentioned by CRA?

  1. Not everyone has the brain or the interest in doing one’s own research.

H&R blockheads are really the last people I would go to. Human errors. Well, barely human really… ;)

TurboTax has an interview process that jogs your mind and offers things you may not have thought of. You can always switch to manual filling of the forms.

At the very least, TurboTax saves paper, since you don’t have to fill the whole return out again if you make a mistake that trickles up…

  2. To answer your question, no there is no real advantage to using any of the above and no you do not pay more for paper filing.. H&R Bloc would be my last choice. The benefits of using a software package is the accuracy of it’s calculations. Also if there are possibilities of carrying forward some deductions rather then using them in the current year, the software will tell you. As well as keeping track of this things. Other benefits of software packages is also tracking your capital loss carry-forwards
