how do I calculate my agi from my w2?

I am filing an amended tax return the 1040x. And I have only used software to do my taxes before now. I have my tax stub and I need to know how to figure my agi from my w2.

  1. You can’t. You W2 does not contain ANY information regarding your deductions to ARRIVE at your AGI. Very basic tax knowledge.

  2. your adjusted gross income is the result of adding all your sources of income, reduced by the various credits you may be able to use ie. IRa contribution, half se tax, alimony etc
if your W-2 income is all you have and you don’t have any of those credits, that is your AGI

  3. You have to go through the same process as when you first filed your tax return.
The only reason to file a 1040X is to correct a return you already filed because of missing information, incorrect filing status, etc.

If there is a change in income, the tax software will correct the AGI on the 1040X return.

  4. YOu don’t
You get your AGI from the original tax return filed
You use the first 1040 filed to complete the 1040X
Use the same software that you used to file the return, easiest way to do an amended return
    Or see a tax professional

  5. Caveat Emptor

AGI comes from your original 1040/1040A/1040EZ. NOT from your W-2.

  6. If the income on your W-2 is ALL of your income for the year, and you have no adjustments, then box 1 is your AGI.
