I don’t have a 1099-R…?

I put money into a 401K. Now I am filling out my tax return and the tax software program is asking me to enter the amount in box 7 of form 1099-R. The problem is, I don’t have a 1099-R. What should I do?

  1. 1099-R is for rolling over money from one 401k to another. If you just started a new 401k and didn’t roll anything over from a previous one, you will not get a 1099-R, so just enter a zero. If you did rollover from a previous 401k and lost your 1099-R, then you need to contact that fund company and ask that they send you a new 1099-R.

  2. You only get a 1099-R when you take money OUT of 1 401K, not when you put it in.
