Should I file a STATE tax return?

I live in Illinois and 23 years old. I just started a new job so I only made about $8k in 2009 and paid $232 in state income tax and $830 in federal. I plan on filing a federal return, but the tax software asks if I want to file a state return for an extra charge. Do I have to file a state return and is it worth it since I didn’t pay much state taxes?

  1. yes, you DO have to file a state return… especially if you made over $3000. Chances are you will get most of your state tax back anyway. I have a tax office in IL, get ahold of me if you want help

  2. Yes you should always file. Given how much you earned in 2009, you’ll probably get a refund on your state taxes anyway.

  3. Absolutely file that state return.. with those low earnings you should get it all back.

  4. More than likely your employer reported these earnings and the IL Dept of Revenue is aware of it. If you don’t report then they will write you, so it is a question of do you want to file now or later? It is prudent to do it at the same time as your federal return. More than likely at your level of income you will get a refund so the fee to file the state return should not involve anything out of pocket.

  5. Yes, according to Illinois state law, you MUST file a state return if you were required to file a federal return.

You don’t have to pay to file on line. You can file a paper return for free, or you can go to the Illinois state Web site and file there:
